Brazil will test super pill against cardiovascular disease

Four drugs in one tablet.
The drug must be tested in 22 hospitals in the country in four months. The first studies, made in Brazil by the Heart Hospital (HCor) in São Paulo indicated that the polypill reduced by 60% the risk of a person suffering a heart attack or stroke (CVA, stroke), in addition to controlling cholesterol and blood pressure.

The multitablet combines two substances to control blood pressure, which acts on cholesterol and another that prevents clogging of blood vessels of the heart. Proven preventive function of the drug, the researchers will now see how it works in patients who already have cardiovascular problems. And the Ministry of Health has already awaiting these results to include the drug in the list of medicines distributed free of charge - what should happen in 2013. In Brazil, cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of death.

About two thousand Brazilian patients who have had heart attack or stroke will test the product for 18 months, this second research phase. Five other countries also take part in this step. "In the most pessimistic forecast, the treatment of patients (experimental phase) should start in October or November," said Otavio Berwanger, director of the Institute for Teaching and Research Hospital Heart and national coordinator of the research.
